"Effective Governance in Challenging Times -2 weeks to go"

-Not long to go now but there are still places left-

conference header

The title of this year's GOVAS conference reflects what must be key for us all; being effective in what we do, seeking to make a positive difference, but also recognising that we have probably never worked in a more difficult, confusing and turbulent context. Whether it's the curriculum and assessment, young peoples' wellbeing, external accountabilities, or balancing the budget whilst finding and retaining staff, (not an exhaustive list I know), there is no escaping the fact that governing today is hard, although hopefully also rewarding for all engaged in it.

The Conference, organised once again in partnership with Stockport Council's Education Services, is open to and aimed at ALL governors at Stockport schools- nursery, infant, junior, primary, secondary, special, alternative provision, whether community, controlled, aided, academy, multi academy trust or free school.

We are delighted to welcome Emma Knights OBE, Chief Executive of the National Governance Association (NGA) as our keynote speaker, someone who continues to be at the heart of all discussions nationally pertaining to governance, whether with ministers and senior civil servants, Ofsted, NCTL, and school leader organisations such as NAHT and ASCL. Alongside Emma, Phil Beswick, Stockport's Director of Education will be our first speaker, focussing on key challenges and issues here in Stockport. There are also a choice of six workshops to choose from, on a wide range of topics.

There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions of speakers,to contribute to discussion around tables and at the workshops, and to network with governors from other schools; refreshments and food are provided too. Last year's conference feedback was very well supported and the feedback overwhelmingly positive. Places are limited to the space available at the venue so please do book your place(-click here-) now if you have not already done so, and encourage others to do the same.

Best Wishes,

Andy Kent ( GOVAS CHAIR)

* The conference is free to all governors whose schools have paid the £10 GOVAS joining fee. All maintained schools in the Borough and the majority of academies are in membership. For the very small number of academies who have not paid the £10 to date, bookings will only be confirmed once the school has paid its £10 joining fee.

Become a GOVAS Management Committee Member - we are a happy and contented bunch, but we could do with a few more friends. We meet three, or four, times a year, usually at the Town Hall. Our main visible event is the conference, but we also meet with council officers once a term and represent governors on a number of committees and we are looking to establish workshops/seminars to complement the LA training programme. To join the management committee, you do not need to have been a governor for over ten years, have a beard, or wear sandals. You do not need to be a Chair of governors, or even aspire to be. We just want governors who are prepared to give up a bit more of their time; to provide a fresh outlook; and to be able to speak up for governors within and outside of Stockport.
