About Govas

GOVAS works closely with the Stockport Children and Young People Directorate, but we are a fully independent association of governors affiliated to the equally independent National Governors Association. Every governor in Stockport is automatically a GOVAS member (as long as your institution pays their subscriptionof £10.00 PA)and our Management Committee is made up exclusively of serving volunteer governors in Stockport’s schools – nursery, primary secondary and special. Our biggest strength is our links with all the school governors in Stockport through our newsletter, special communications, and this website.

What is Safer Internet Day?

Safer Internet Day (SID) is celebrated in nearly 100 countries around the world in February of each year. In Europe, 30 countries mark the day with support from the European Commission's Safer Internet Programme. SID is coordinated in the UK by the UK Safer Internet Centre to promote safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones, especially among children and young people.

Safer Internet Day 2013 - the tenth anniversary of Safer Internet Day - will take place on Tuesday 5 February, around the theme 'Online Rights and Responsibilities' and under the slogan 'Connect with respect'. For the latest information about Safer Internet Day 2013 in the UK go to the UK Safer Internet Centre website

Safer Internet Day 2013 highlights

Young people's charter of

10 top online rights and responsibilities Many of you supported our 'Have your Say' survey where we asked young people to choose their top 10 online rights and responsibilities. We received an overwhelming

24,000 responses from both primary and secondary schools, and based on the results of the survey, we are developing a charter of "ten online rights and responsibilities".

On the tenth anniversary of the day, 5th Feb 2013, we will deliver this statement of rights, with ten young people to a high profile politician in a high profile place. Look out for the charter on our website on the day as well on our social media channels - via Facebook www.facebook.com/saferinternetuk

For a third year running we will broadcast a marathon 12-hour live internet radio show dedicated to Safer Internet Day and the theme of online rights and responsibilities.

We can now reveal that topics in the show will include bullying, digital literacy, online reputation, content sharing, reporting and so on. Each hour will have practical and useful information for children and young people, teachers and professionals as well as parents directly from experts, industry and service providers.
