Spring is Coming -Conference 2015
Dear Colleagues/Governors,
Spring is coming!
OK, it may not feel like it at the moment, but we've got buds on our magnolia, so we must be getting near. The nearest i've got to having green fingers was helping Reception to make dinosaurs before half-term, but the mystery of plants (and weeds) is on a long list of things which i wish i had taken the time to learn more about.
It's probably too late for me, but certainly not for the children in our schools. Fortunately, 'Growing Outside' will be exhibiting at the Stockport Governor Conference on 7th March.Growing Outside is an exciting scheme working alongside schools, which teaches the curriculum in an outdoor environment through fun gardening sessions. Whilst growing their own tasty, healthy, organic food, caring for the environment and appreciating the natural world, children will be using Maths, Literacy and Science, as well as relating what we do to topics being studied in the classroom.
Continuing the outdoor theme, also exhibiting will be Tony Millar, of Millar Landscapes. As well as delivering a full range of landscape construction and grounds maintenance services in a range of educational settings, the company is unique in providing teachers with access to a secure online system which provides information about projects that they have installed in schools, enabling new and exciting learning opportunities to be developed. This facility seamlessly enhances learning outside the classroom within the school campus. Tony is a businessman, but one with a strong interest in how we educate our children, and how the business community can work with schools to provide opportunities for our children and making sure that they are leaving school with the right range of skills. He was one of the judges on last year's Young Entrepreneurs event and he has been helping us in our discussions with the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce on how we can promote governance within the business community.
As part of the GOVAS constitution, we are obliged to hold an AGM, and the Conference is the ideal time to do this. The AGM papers are now on the web-site and found -Here-. We would ask you to look at these before the day, as we are well aware from feedback, that you would rather be spending time in the workshops, listening to the speakers and the Q&A session, than listening to me telling you what a good job we do. We are here to represent you, however, and the Conference would not take place without us, so please bear with us and we promise to be done in ten minutes.
The Conference is a fantastic opportunity to not only learn new skills and pick-up tips, but also to network with other governors from Stockport and beyond. Please try to get along!
