Last Chance to Register -Stockport Governor Conference 2017: “THE SCHOOL-LED SYSTEM: WHERE ARE WE NOW?”
The agenda for the day is now available -click this link-
Time is running out to register for the Stockport Governors Conference, Saturday 11th March. -Cut off point is Tuesday evening 2300 Hrs-
Last year, we went head-to-head with NGAs North West Regional Conference (by accident!) and still managed to attract almost twice as many governors and trustees as their event. This year, we are unopposed, and we are at least on target to match last year’s attendance. Thank you to all of you who have already registered.
Although the format is similar - workshops followed by a key-note address - this year’s conference will be a more interactive experience, with more opportunity to spend time and discuss governance issues with your fellow colleagues.
The full workshop list can be found on the GOVAS web-site, and most are self-explanatory, but here is a bit more detail on a few of them:
The role of governors in supporting effective transition -Carl Emery ~ Research Associate, University of Manchester, Institute of Education
The transition from primary to secondary school is important in the lives of children and their families. The workshop will focus on how governors can support their schools, both the associated primary school and receiving secondary school, in ensuring that pupils will have the tools and emotional resilience to manage this transition.- Primary session is now fully booked no places left.
Holding school leaders to account -Michelle Murray ~ Executive Headteacher Gatley Primary School -Alan Beswick ~ Head of School Effectiveness
This workshop will support governors in assessing the effectiveness of the accountability in which they hold the school and its senior leaders. It will provide governors with the opportunity to explore models of LA and teaching school (often in partnership) external support and evaluation and how these can be used to secure continuous school improvement. -Unfortunatly this workshop is now fully booked
Assessment for 2017 and beyond in secondary schools -Martin Obermuller ~ Senior School Improvement Adviser
Changes to secondary assessment accountability measures at Key Stage 4 continue to be implemented. The workshop will identify for governors the new measures and system supporting the Progress 8 element and the timeline for further implementation of the new GCSEs and how they are graded.
Competency framework for governance -Pam Dunham ~ Co-ordinator of Governor Services
The Framework was published in January 2017 as a companion document to the revised Governance Handbook and details. The workshop will consider themes for governing board development based on the six features of effective governance; strategic leadership, accountability, people, structures, compliance and evaluation.
If you haven’t yet registered, please do so (here) and we look forward to seeing you this Saturday at Marple.
Best Regards,
Stu Foster
Chair, GOVAS
Become a GOVAS Management Committee Member - we are a happy and contented bunch, but we could do with a few more friends. We meet three, or four, times a year, usually at the Town Hall. Our main visible event is the conference, but we also meet with council officers once a term and represent governors on a number of committees and we are looking to establish workshops/seminars to complement the LA training programme. To join the management committee, you do not need to have been a governor for over ten years, have a beard, or wear sandals. You do not need to be a Chair of governors, or even aspire to be. We just want governors who are prepared to give up a bit more of their time; to provide a fresh outlook; and to be able to speak up for governors within and outside of Stockport.
